Step by step 10

  1. The introduction: wait off the floor, walk on casually as the music starts, then an underarm turn into hold. 0:52
  2. Home base: a simple step-tap to the side, a two-beat pattern that suits most songs. 2:16
  3. Add a little sway through the back and hips; on slow, soft songs slide the foot instead of tapping. 2:53
  4. Separation: the leader lowers the hands and extends forward so the follower walks back into a two-hand hold. 4:41
  5. Lead it gently with body weight, never a shove, and keep a bend in the elbows so you don't over-separate. 5:13
  6. Underarm turn: from the separation, the leader draws the follower in and raises the left hand to turn them. 6:20
  7. Keep arms soft and elbows bent through the turn, with the follower tracking where the leader's hand goes. 7:50
  8. Dip ending: from your dance hold, ease into a simple dip as the song finishes. 9:47
  9. Dip safety: keep all four hands on each other and the follower in front, so your bodies stay connected. 10:15
  10. Before the dip, stand at 90 degrees; the leader takes a wide step and stays upright as the follower dips. 11:14

The steps are a summary in our words, checked against the video — the coach shows every move.

Form cues from the coach

  • Use a simple step-tap home base with a little sway so it doesn't look robotic
  • Keep elbows soft and bent when separating or turning, and never shove your partner
  • Before a dip, stand at 90 degrees with a wide base and bodies connected
