Salsa Single Right Turn for Beginners, Step by Step

Video by Salsaventura on YouTube · Open on YouTube

Salsaventura's teachers break down the single right (clockwise) turn, the first turn in salsa, from the basic step: turn over 1-2-3, finish with the back basic, use the arms for momentum, then dance it to music. Practise it alone first; it works for leaders and followers.

Step by step 6

Tap a time to watch that step in the video.

  1. Begin with the basic step; master it before you try any turns. 0:33
  2. Turn to the right: step the left foot forward on 1 already turning a quarter, halfway round on 2. 0:56
  3. Lift the left foot, pivot on the right to finish the turn on 3, then step back on 5-6-7. 1:34
  4. Slowly again with the hands centred for momentum, then add one basic step before the turn. 2:06
  5. Tips: relax and think of only one turn, and swing the arms from the left to help the spin. 3:01
  6. Dance a few basics to music, then add the turn. 4:06

The steps are a summary in our words, checked against the video — the coach shows every move.

Form cues from the coach

  • Start turning a quarter to the right as the left foot steps forward on 1
  • Relax and think of just one turn rather than forcing it
  • Hold the arms slightly to the left, then let them swing to help the spin
