Beginner Bhangra Footwork: Bedi, Dhamaal and Punjab

Video by BFunk on YouTube · Open on YouTube

Shivani Bhagwan and Chaya Kumar teach the three footwork patterns under most bhangra moves, each slowly, then faster, then 16 counts of each to music. Bedi is a tap; Dhamaal and Punjab are hopped, so expect light hops throughout.

Step by step 8

Tap a time to watch that step in the video.

  1. Stance: soft, unlocked knees, hands on hips, weight shifted onto your right leg so the left foot is free. 2:01
  2. Bedi: tap the free foot lightly as you shift your weight quickly from leg to leg, in slow fours and eights. 2:48
  3. Bedi at a faster tempo, ready for quicker songs. 5:19
  4. Dhamaal: lift the left leg with a flexed foot and hop; lifting it just past the knee is fine to start. 5:59
  5. Dhamaal like a pendulum: land each foot close to the other, knees bent, light on the balls of the feet. 7:33
  6. Punjab: hop as you cross the free foot in front, touching the ball of the foot, then open back; alternate. 9:35
  7. Keep your chin high, chest broad and core strong; then Punjab at a faster tempo. 10:35
  8. To music: 16 counts each of Bedi, Dhamaal and Punjab. 11:58

The steps are a summary in our words, checked against the video — the coach shows every move.
