House Dance Tutorial: Loose Legs, Body and Arms

Video by Jardy Santiago on YouTube · Open on YouTube

A house dance teacher breaks one classic step, loose legs, into three parts: the footwork (ball change and pivot heel on floor markers), the body (drop and rise, or a forward jack), then arm styling, and puts them together. Challenging at first, taught slowly.

Step by step 9

Tap a time to watch that step in the video.

  1. Legs: face 45 degrees and ball change on two floor markers a shoulder-width apart, on the balls of your feet. 2:33
  2. Pivot heel: after the ball change, pivot the back foot so the heel lands in the centre, then bring it back. 4:01
  3. Other side: ball change and pivot heel on the other markers, then link both sides fluidly. 4:51
  4. Drop and rise: drop loosely on the ball change and rise like a wave on the heel as the back foot pivots. 6:37
  5. Forward jack, the other option: rock the body forward on every count as you do the loose legs. 8:26
  6. Arms, holding the box: arms loosely in front, moving naturally with the body, never stiff. 10:14
  7. Wipe and swipe: wipe down on the ball change, swipe out on the heel, then a figure of eight back round. 11:00
  8. Put it together: legs, body and arms, adding small pivots and your own freestyle. 12:56
  9. Freestyle demo: loose legs danced to music with his own variations. 14:55

The steps are a summary in our words, checked against the video — the coach shows every move.

Form cues from the coach

  • Stay on the balls of your feet and keep the body loose and fluid, never stiff
  • Drop on the ball change and rise on the heel so the body moves with the legs
  • Learn the legs first, then add the body, then the arms
